Learn What Lies Beneath at the Aquarium of the Pacific
September 03, 2018
Ever wonder what lies beneath the waves at your favorite beach? At the Aquarium of the Pacific, you’ll see exactly what swims below the surface as you marvel at the more than 11,000 animals in exhibits showcasing the stunning variety of life indigenous to the Pacific Ocean. Though the aquarium is a bit of a drive from our hotel—roughly 45 minutes—the journey is absolutely worth it. You’ll love the mystical Amber Forest, where giant kelp tower high as trees. You’ll laugh at sea otters floating languidly on the water. You’ll delight at brilliantly plumed lorikeets that eat right out of your hand. The Shark Lagoon features more than 150 rays and sharks, and a special underwater crawl space at the penguin exhibit allows you to experience the thrill of swimming with penguins without ever having to get wet. The crown jewel of the aquarium is the massive Pacific Octopus, which with an arm-span of 14 feet never fails to inspire awe.
