LA's Independent Film Houses

If you’re not from LA (and we’re assuming your not if you’re staying at the Grafton on vacation) it might feel impossible to choose a movie theater given the wide range of options. So we've done the work for you, curating your options according to your tastes. If you’re looking for screenings of the classics, such as Hitchcock’s The Birds or Welles’s Citizen Kane, we recommend American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre. This theater has been in operation since the 1940s and offers the “classic” movie experience. American Cinematheque runs another of our favorites, the Egyptian Theater. In addition to hosting events like the Apra International Film Festival and AFI Fest 2016, the Egyptian offers historic tours, where a docent guides you behind the scenes and into dressing rooms, singer’s boxes, and the even into the projection booth too.
